featuring Devon Allison, DDS, PhD

2 CE  Credits - AGD 490 Periodontics

Course Description:

During this online continuing education seminar, we will focus on systemic and local antibiotic usage for the periodontal patient and how the new 2017 AAP World Workshop has changed our thoughts on the treatment of the 'aggressive periodontitis' patient.

Course Objectives:

Participants will:

  • Learn to review/de-mystify the new AAP periodontitis classifications

  • Review the commonly used systemic and local delivery antibiotics for treatment of periodontal conditions

  • Understand different clinical situations when antibiotics can help your periodontal patient; and

  • Discuss concerns with antibiotics in peri-implantitis treatment

About our speaker:

Devon Allison, DDS, PhD

Dr. Allison graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry with a DDS/PhD in Molecular Microbiology/Immunology in 2019 and a certificate in Periodontics in 2022. Her PhD, done under the guidance of Dr. Mark Shirtliff, PhD, focused on the how polymicrobial oral biofilms can disseminate from the oral cavity to colonize distant organs and gain tolerance to front-line antibiotic treatments. Dr. Allison is currently a post-doctoral fellow in Dr. Vivek Thumbigere-Math’s lab, studying the impact of lyst mutations, the genetic mutation responsible for Chediak-Higashi syndrome, on the oral microbiome, the immune system, and rapid periodontitis. She lectures first year dental students on basic immunology and microbiology and tutors dental students in periodontics coursework. Dr. Allison is passionate about working with all patients, especially those with special needs, to improve their access to dental care and management of their periodontal status. She also works part-time with several general dentists in College Park, focusing on periodontal treatment and surgery. When she’s not working, she can be found hiking in Northern Maryland or training for the NRC marathon on the rail trails.
