Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSD) in Dental Professionals and Assistants.
2 CE Credits
Bryan Morrison, D.C.
WRMSDs are common in dental personnel with an annual incidence of 66-87.2% and approximately 30% of dentists retire early due to WRMSDs. It is very costly in terms of direct care, loss of production, lost wages, recruitment, training, etc. Current medical care for MSK conditions often does not follow established guidelines leading to more cost and disability mainly due to unnecessary diagnostics especially imaging, and ineffective or even harmful treatment, and consequently less than optimal outcomes. New data on WRMSDs suggests strategies that identify patient capacities and goals, address ergonomics and other triggering factors, provide gradual guided loading of affected and related tissues are most effective. Patient education and coaching can provide long term self-care strategies intended to enhance understanding of pain, personal fitness, resilience, and antifragility. These are the cornerstones of patient centered care that can protect and maximize the dental professional’s active career-span. Evidence based rehab professionals (a subset of chiropractors, physical therapists, and occupational therapists) can provide lower cost, more effective interventions. Using low back pain as the most prevalent, disabling, and costly non-communicable disease worldwide, data reveals chiropractic medicine as the lowest cost entry point with the highest satisfaction. Additionally, patients who make use of this resource are 50% less likely to receive an opioid prescription for their condition. Accessibility: Chiropractors are portal of entry, in all 50 states and DC. In other words, no referral is required. Most private insurance, Medicare covers chiropractic care. Identifying features of the evidence-based practice will be discussed.
Participants will be able to describe acute, repetitive motion and constant pressure/tension WRMSDs and list specific types of WRMSD experienced by Dental Professionals.
Participants will be able to explain the normal injury healing process and list predisposing and precipitating processes that may impair healing in WRMSD.
Participants will develop a greater understanding of how persistent pain can develop long after normal tissue healing time.
Demonstrate management strategies for pain control and to stimulate proper healing. The process of returning to activity and the role of General Physical Preparedness in prevention of future injuries will be discussed in detail.
Participants will be able to identify features of a patient centered, evidence based rehabilitation professional practice.
